Who we are ...

Chemical engineers know a lot about engineering, ... and they know chemistry. Electrical engineers know a lot about engineering, ... and they know electricity. Environmental engineers know a lot about engineering, ... but often they do not know much about the environment.

ATR Associates, Inc. differs from many environmental engineering firms.  We consider ourselves to be Ecological Engineers. We are a small ecological engineer-ing company in Arlington, Virginia. We integrate ecological principles with 'traditional' engineering expertise in order to manage growth and development to the benefit of both humans and of the ecological resources that humans affect. Our staff are trained in both engineering and ecology - we do not have to integrate teams comprised of single disciplines for a particular project.



What we do ...

We identify innovative solutions to land use and development projects, design those solutions, and oversee the implementation. For instance, we take advantage of the ecological functions of traditional landscape features, modify those features to achieve traditional stormwater engineering goals, and then combine those modified landscape features with other, traditional techniques, to manage stormwater while maintaining the hydrological balance and water quality of the affected watershed. We use natural stream channel design to provide flood and erosion protection while maintaining or enhancing aquatic habitats. We are turning a non-productive Brownfield property into a wetland bank so the owner can recover costs while increasing the ecological resources of the area. In short, we look for cost-effective, win-win solutions.
